Sean Kealey

Developer, BarackObama.com

I spent the past year doing everything I can to help re-elect the President of the United States. And it worked! It's been a long journey; along the way I've learned a lot from my brilliant colleagues. Together we built something of which we are extremely proud.

  • Obama for America — Frontend Developer
    • Served on the team behind BarackObama.com, the first and only responsive presidential campaign website. As part of that team, I built hundreds of pages using semantic HTML5 and CSS3 (using the LESS preprocessor), progressively enhancing interactive experiences for everything from IE7 to modern browsers and mobile devices.
    • Built a custom YouTube channel, which served over 250 million views. The channel was built on foundation of PHP, javascript and the YouTube API. The app also includes customized Facebook Open Graph integration, sharing activity using the Facebook javascript SDK. The project also included a responsive version (http://www.barackobama.com/video).
    • Built the issues pages on BarackObama.com, which were the main landing pages for our persuasive email and ad campaigns. These were built to be completely customizable by non-tech campaign staff on a versatile CMS.
    • Built and maintained the main navigation for BarackObama.com, including the mobile navigation. Collaborated with data analysts, designers and user experience engineers to help drive an overhaul to our content strategy, which lead to doubling and tripling of traffic from our navigation.
    • Worked on the optimization team, creating variations and testing our donate pages via Optimizely.com. Our work in improving these pages saw incremental revenue and conversion gains that totalled over $100 million over the course of the campaign.
    • Collaborated on our Facebook Open Graph integration, including the use of built-in Facebook actions like watch and read along with custom actions like “I Voted”. Our work was the largest application of custom Open Graph actions by any site to date, resulting in tens of millions of Facebook impressions and hundreds of thousands of referral visits.
